In an age where genres are becoming increasingly malleable and indefinable entities, Velcro 98 touch down from multiple corners of the musical globe. The lineup (Darragh Geoghegan - vocals, Conor Healy - lead guitar, Craig Geoghegan - bass guitar and Richie O'Brien - drums) may be reminiscent of that of a traditional guitar band, but the Dublin four piece are not laden down by tradition in any sense of the word. The band's songwriting is digestibly melodic and hook laden, and the means of delivery is fresh and unpredictable at each turn. At times they sound classic and anthemic; at others raw and bristling.
This rejection of any uniformity of sound and approach also translates into stirring live performances. In Darragh Geoghegan they possess that rarest of things - a charismatic, no holds barred front-man with a voice to match. He veers from sawdust and rasp to lilt and croon at varying moments of the Velcro 98 set, all the while backed by the pulse and energy of the back line behind him.
Currently in pre-production for their debut EP "A Thing for Ghosts" and garnering attention through a string of live gigs in the second half of 2018, Velcro 98 are set to erupt onto the Irish music scene.
