...From Front page....
- At the outset, each region must select a local act which they think will best represent their region at the Irish Youth Music Awards in Dublin in April 2009.
- However, the only people allowed to take part in the decision making process, are the musicians themselves!
- No adults. No experts. No lobby groups.
- Each act has an equal number of votes (singer songwriter has same amount of votes as a full band etc) to ensure fairness.
- The incentive for the acts to vote wisely is that, if their region scoops the main award in Dublin, everyone in their regional group gets to spend time in a professional recording studio, where they will record a full album of their own original material!

- Those who are not actually playing at the Dublin show, all become part of the local support team, and are assigned a ‘job’. Photographers, image consultants, Myspace managers, guitar techs, drum techs, radio pluggers, biog writers, press officers etc etc. …and they are all judged on their performance.
- The results for the teamwork are assessed, and added to the live performance of ‘their act’. That’s how the winning region is chosen.
Local Selection Full Rules / Guidelines
- Initial entry via entry forms.
- 10 entry forms will be drawn, and those 10 acts will be invited to take part in the Local Live Selection Night. (Discretion to each location, as to exact numbers to perform on Live Selection Night, but only one act can be sent forward to Dublin Day.)
- Applicants must be aged 12 to 19 years.
- In the case of a multiple application (BAND, DUO, TRIO etc) applicants must be AVERAGE AGE 12 – 19 years. (Different needs from different locations warrants the need for local Discretion within these age limits. Applicants whose ages are OUTSIDE these limits will not be considered.)
- Applicants should ideally already be members / volunteers within the local youth organisation.
- Judges. THE ACTS ARE THE JUDGES. Each act will be given 4 Votes, and voting cards with their act name printed (rubber stamped) on them. Acts cannot vote for themselves. If an act consists of only one or two individuals, they are still entitled to 4 votes AS AN ACT.
- Audience votes count also; Audience will be given voting slips upon entry to venue. No audience voting cards to be given out after First act has begun performing.
- Total audience vote will count as ONE VOTE, effectively making the audience a tiebreaker, and not a lobby.
- Votes will be collected and counted on the night, and selections made and announced of One Artist, and 3 songs. NOTE TO STEWARDS; If winning ACT has also written winning SONG, then you go to song 2 on the list of winning songs and so on... until the winning song is from another original source(Famous covers cannot be considered).
- This will be the song the winning act will need to prepare and perform in Dublin, along with 1 other song, which must be their own original composition.
- All voting slips must be forwarded onto Garageland after event, to verify votes.
- ’30 Jobs’ will then be issued AT RANDOM from 2 hats (1 x names, 1 x job) for participants outside of songwriters and performers selected. The purpose of these jobs is to enable every participant to become part of the team behind their representing act.
- Representing artists do not get jobs.
- It will be the responsibility of the assignee to learn about their job. Their Team will be graded on their collective performance.
- Job descriptions, along with hints and goals are printed below.
- Garageland to be notified as to individuals and job titles.
- Preparation for the ‘Prep Gig’ gets underway immediately.

What are The ’30 Jobs’?
The Jobs outlined below are representative of real-life jobs within the music industry, and have proved to be immensely useful, as well as a lot of fun!
We have approached the project in the exact same way as any Major Record Label would set about 'breaking' a new act, before the release of a first album.
Four Departments of the Music Industry need to work together,
Marketing & Press, Image, Live Show and Finance.
Tour Manager & Team
This Team will Consist of the Following
- Tour manager (x1): It’s the job of the Tour Manager to work with the sound engineer, lighting engineer, stage manager, guitar tech and drum tech, to make sure the live performance of the Artist is as smooth as possible.
- Stage Manager(x1). For this project, it’s the job of the stage manager to draw up the stage specifications (stage specs) of the act, and post them onto your teams' Myspace page. These Stage Specs will be used on the night of 4th April 2009, and will be judged as to their accuracy. Stage specs are essentially a ‘map’ of the stage, showing where band members stand/ sit, and which instruments they use.
- Sound Engineer (x1). For this project, it’s the job of the sound engineer to draw up a ‘channel list’ and ‘backline list’, and and post them onto your teams' Myspace page. These lists will be used on the night of 4th April 2009, and will be judged as to their accuracy. A 'channel list' and 'backline list' is a list of instruments being used by the band / act, including vocalists, and amplification (eg 1 x Marshall JCM900 amp, 1 x Peavey 120 Bass Amp, 1 x Tama Swingstar Drumkit. 3 x vocals). Guitar tech and drum tech (below)will supply this information to you.
- Guitar Tech (x1): The Guitar Tech makes sure that the guitars are tuned. If a string breaks, you must be able to replace it, tune it, and get it back to the guitarist in question, as quickly as possible! For scoring points & assessment purposes, it will be your job to supply your guitarists' equipment list(s) for posting onto your teams' Myspace page. (Good idea if there’s a spare guitar, and Bass Guitar on hand for these occasions).
- Drum Tech (x1): The Drum Tech makes sure that the drumkit is set up properly, there’s more parts on a drumkit than first meets the eye! For scoring points & assessment purposes, it will be your job to supply your drummers' equipment list for posting onto your teams' Myspace page.(Good idea if drummer carries extra sticks).
- Lighting Engineer (x1): It will be the job of the lighting engineer to bring visual life to the sound of the Artist. This can be achieved even through the use of very minimal stage lighting. The important aspect is to have knowledge of the music and the act. Then the lighting engineer will know where to start from. Make sure the 'live' photographer gets a good shot of your best efforts for the Myspace page! (Expensive lights are very often unavailable, so imagination is key).
Image Manager & Team:
This Team will Consist of the Following
- Image manager (x1) The image manager is the person who deals with the Myspace manager and Press Office manager, and, through working with the Image Team, supplies at least 2 finished photographs to these people.
- Photographer (x2) Photographer no. 1 is to be: in discussion with the Image team and artist to take and select photos of the band / act. We would like to see 1 x indoor shot, and 1 x ‘location’ shot (outdoor). Photographer no. 2 is to take ‘live’ shots onstage on the prep night.
- Image Consultant (x1): It’s the Image Consultant’s job to talk to the Image Team and Act, about their clothes and overall image. We suggest looking through music magazines and fashion magazines to see how successful contemporary artists present themselves. This is one of the areas where most artists fail, very often thinking that their heroes don’t engage in this, as it’s not cool. They all do, Green Day, Metallica, Damien Rice, Lilly Allen, and obviously Madonna and U2.Make-up artist (x1): In very basic band and artist photography, basic foundation make-up is used to offset flash glare, and cover simple skin blemishes. Hair gel and colouring are widely used to emphasise expression. Make-up is an art form in itself, however, and this will depend upon the wishes of the individuals involved. It will be the Make-up artist’s Job to make sure this area is discussed with the image team, and the act, before the photo sessions. For scoring points & assessment purposes, it will be your job to supply your make-up list for posting onto your teams' Myspace page.
This Team will Consist of the Following
- Myspace manager (x1) The Myspace manager is the person who deals directly with the Image Manager, and The Biography writer, and then works with the team as a team member.
- Team members (can be up to 4 people, including manager) Myspace manager and team will need to get the details of regional Myspace account by request from Garageland@ireland.com. Once the account has been set up, it will be the job of the Myspace team to get the biography and band/act photograph up on site (these will need to be acquired from the photographer, and biography writer). It will also be the Myspace teams’ responsibility to acquire ‘friends’, at least 50 of which are other bands, and 15 are ‘fans’.
Myspace allows bands and artists to post MP3’s of their work, if available. This is not essential for this project, given that the selected band/ act may or may not yet have recordings of their music.
Famous bands are allowed as friends. Indeed, we encourage this.
Furthermore, it will be the job of this team to post forthcoming gig dates, and other news of any interest.
Please note, Myspace is a self-regulated site, suitable for music promotion, but we still urge caution in your online communications.
Press Office Manager & Team
This Team will Consist of the Following
- Press Office Manager (x1) The Press Office Manager is the person who relays all information from the Press Office Team to The Myspace Team. The Press Office Manager must also relay all Press Releases, and report any press successes, for posting onto your teams' Myspace page.
- Biography writer (can be up to 2 people) The Biography writer must submit a 200 word ‘Biography’ of the Band / Act onto your teams' Myspace page. A ‘biography’ is the basic information that all new acts present to newspapers and magazines prior to their being famous or well known. Usually, this information would include band member names, a little about how they got together, where they’re from, and what their influences might be.
Hint no 1 Contact details of the Acts’ Management need to be made very clear in any band biography.
Hint no 2 Band biographies are notoriously boring, and any flourish or twist that can bring some life into the piece, could possibly make a real difference to your act being noticed. This is difficult, (as it can backfire by being annoying!) but always worth a try.
Here is an example of a good Band Biography……
The Hitchcock Blondes:Anthony Wall McManus – Vocals/GuitarBarry Redmond – Guitar
Jason Allen – Bass
‘An indescribable sense of violence in the performance’ is how one critic described them and it easy see why. With their up-tempo hard rock sound, dark as night lyrics and energetic on stage presence, any show from The Blondes is exciting and intense.
Formed in 2004 The Blondes decided early to concentrate on writing for the initial months of the partnership to avoid the dreaded cover band doldrums. Inspired by the heavier acts of the Seattle hay day and their subsequent reincarnations a definite and very modern sound developed surprisingly quickly and it wasn’t long before they were ready to gig. Tentative beginnings as a support act in the smaller clubs in Dublin soon led to the band staging their own full shows in bigger venues.
They are currently putting the finishing touches to their debut EP. It will be available later in the year.

- News writer (can be up to 2 people): The News Writer’s job is to come up with at least one story about the Act’s progress, or any interesting thing that might grab the attention of the press. These things can be anything from the Act saving a cat from a tree, or being abducted by aliens. Interesting facts about artists aren’t always related to the music, but they can be fun, and news editors like these kind of stories. Did the act recently meet someone famous?… Did they save some old lady’s cat from a tree?… Don’t forget that the very fact that the Act has been selected to represent your region is quite a bit of news in itself!… What is the date of your local ‘Prep Gig’?… You should also mention that the date in Dublin is The 4th April 2009 in The Village. For scoring points & assessment purposes, it will be your job to supply your news stories for posting onto your teams' Myspace page.
- PR agent (can be up to 2 people): The PR Agents’ job is to take the Biography and the News piece from the Biography Writer and the News Writer, and make a ‘Press Release’. Then send it to as many of the LOCAL newspapers and magazines as possible. Don’t be afraid to ring the newspapers and magazines also, and see if they’ll help you, you’ll be very surprised at how helpful some of them can be! For scoring points & assessment purposes, it will be your job to supply your Press Release, along with any successful press placings, for posting onto your teams' Myspace page.
- Radio Plugger (can be up to 2 people): The Radio Pluggers’ job is to take the Press Release from the PR Agent, along with a CD of the Act, if available, and send it to as many LOCAL: radio station DJs as possible. Don’t be afraid to ring the DJs also, as a lot of Radio Stations and DJs can be very helpful. Make sure you take note of ANY MENTIONS THAT YOU GET ON RADIO, AND RELAY THAT TO US THROUGH YOUR PRESS OFFICE MANAGER. For scoring points & assessment purposes, it will be your job to supply your efforts list, along with any successful 'hits' or news of radio plays, for posting onto your teams' Myspace page.
The Finance Team
This Team will Consist of the Following
- Accountant: The accountant will be in charge of collecting money at the door of the Prep Gig. This person will have to arrange a ‘float’ (so you’ll have change to give to customers), The number of people in the Gig should match directly with the amount of money taken in, and this money will be used towards transport costs for the local region.
- Fund Raiser (up to 4 people). The job of the Fund Raiser is to collect money locally, to be put towards the local campaign.
All of the above 'Jobs' will be rated as having been performed 'Excellent', 'Fair', or 'Poor', and will used alongside the Artist's Dublin Performance as a deciding factor in the final result.
When the local 'Prep Gig' has taken place in each region, 4 individuals from Each Region will be selected from the above Teams and invited to attend the Dublin event as delegates. We suggest this is done by drawing straws.
Anyone who has decided to leave the project in advance of the Prep Gig, will not be eligible to travel in this way.
So have fun.
